MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO – Walmart Canada has committed to purchasing 1.5 million lbs of beef sourced from certified sustainable producers in the coming year, in what the company said will be the largest-ever quantity bought by any retailer. Beef producers supplying Walmart Canada as part of the program are third-party certified and are required to meet standards and production practices that were established by the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB).

The retailer said the initial commitment applies to the next calendar year and that the quantity purchased will increase in subsequent years. Horacio Barbeito, president and chief executive officer of Walmart Canada, said the agreement demonstrates the company’s commitment for the entire food-supply chain, from farm to fork.

“We’re making massive strides towards advancing sustainability within the Canadian beef industry, propelled by our commitment to being a regenerative company and made possible by strong partnerships with the CRSB and our suppliers,” Barbeito said.

Walmart Canada includes more than 400 stores that serve an estimated 1.5 million customers daily.

“Leadership from organizations like Walmart inspires change and supports the Canadian beef sector’s continuous improvement goals,” said Anne Wasko, chair of the CRSB and a rancher based in Eastend, Saskatchewan. “The CRSB is honored to partner with Walmart Canada on this ambitious commitment on its journey towards a more sustainable future.”
