SIOUX FALLS, SD. – Smithfield Foods plans to invest nearly $6 million to upgrade an existing wastewater treatment facility at the company’s Sioux Falls pork processing plant.

A building permit filed with the city shows the project will include a 25,013-square-foot addition to the existing building with new tanks and support buildings and new fine screen building. Rice Lake Construction is listed as the contractor, and the valuation of the project is $5,977,500.

The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has levied fines against the facility in the past for violations of the facility’s surface water discharge permit.
