President's Choice Pub Recipe Chicken Nuggets
A food safety investigation linked chicken nuggets to an outbreak of Salmonella enteritidis in Canada.

OTTAWA, Ontario – The Public Health Agency of Canada reported 12 cases ofSalmonella enteritidis that have been linked to breaded chicken nugget products sold at grocery stores operated by Loblaw Companies Ltd., a Canadian food retailer. The affected items include President's Choice Pub Recipe Chicken Nuggets with the best before code “2018 MR 15” and UPC 060383171315 sold before July 13, 2017.

The cases are spread across four provinces: British Columbia (1), Alberta (5), Ontario (5) and New Brunswick (1). Two people have been hospitalized, the agency said. Individuals reported getting sick between April and June.

“Based on the investigation findings to date, exposure to President’s Choice brand Pub Recipe Chicken Nuggets (800 g) has been identified as a source of the outbreak,” the agency said in a statement. “Several individuals involved in the outbreak reported eating President’s Choice brand Pub Recipe Chicken Nuggets (800g) before their illness occurred.

“A sample of President’s Choice brand Pub Recipe Chicken Nuggets (800 g), with best before date 2018 MR 15, collected from a retail establishment tested positive for Salmonella enteritidis and had the same genetic fingerprint as the cases of human illness reported in this outbreak. The CFIA has issued a food recall warning and is working with industry to ensure the product is removed from the retail market.”

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. Therefore, public health officials are urging consumers not to eat the affected products. Loblaw said in a notice on its website that all the affected products were removed from store shelves, and customers can return the recalled items, with or without a receipt, to any store where President’s Choice products are sold.
