WASHINGTON – Green Bay Dressed Beef LLC, doing business as American Foods Group LLC launched a recall of 7,420 lbs. of beef brain products on concerns of contamination with specified risk materials (SRM), the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the US Dept. of Agriculture reported.
Specified risk materials are tissues in cattle that are at high risk for prion contamination, according to USDA. Prions are thought to be the cause of a specific group of brain diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
FSIS inspectors discovered the problem during verification activities. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions or injuries due to consumption of the products. FSIS is advising consumers who purchased the products to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
The beef brains were produced on various dates between April 24 and Aug. 11, FSIS said. Products subject to the recall include 15-unit cases containing beef brains labeled “AMERICAN FOODS GROUP BEEF BRAINS <30” and bearing packaging code 06400. The affected products bear establishment number “EST. 410” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The beef brains were shipped to a distributor in California.
