A European hotel chain has placed an embargo on bacon.

Nordic Choice hotel group, which operates over 170 properties throughout Scandinavia and the Baltics including Comfort, Quality and Clarion has banned bacon and sausage from its breakfast menu and will replace them with plant-based options. But Nordic’s owner, Petter Stordalen, said bacon and sausage were being banned in the name of sustainability, not because the World Health Organization recently reported that processed meats are carcinogenic.

“The focus on sustainability permeates what we do in Nordic Choice,” Stordalen told a Norwegian business newspaper.

Hotel guests will also see fewer grain cereals and cheese on the menu, according to reports. Stordalen is known to use his status that comes with overseeing a major hotel chain to promote awareness about global issues.
