KANSAS CITY, Mo. – National Beef Packing announced plans for a $5 million expansion of its Hummels Wharf, Pa., beef processing facility.

The company will add ground beef grinding and packaging equipment to the existing infrastructure. The expansion is set to begin in March 2014. Additionally, the company said it would hire an additional 25 to 30 employees to support the new production capacity. More than 200 employees currently work at the plant.

“This expansion is important to our business, as it positions us with greater flexibility to serve customers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic areas of the United States,” said Monte Lowe, executive vice president, sales and marketing, National Beef. “It also extends our product offering to include multiple package formats and lean points.”

Mitch Hansen, vice president, operations, National Beef, added: “The committed and dedicated employees have been a driving force in the overall success of this facility. Hummels Wharf has been an integral part of the National Beef case-ready products production system for more than a decade, so we are excited about the possibilities this expansion will bring to our team.”
