PARIS – A highly pathogenic strain of bird flu strain was detected at a poultry farm in Australia, according to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

The event represents the first outbreak in the country in 15 years. The H7 strain was found at a poultry farm in Maitland, New South Wales. The exact type of H7 strain is unknown, however 5,000 free range laying hens have died from the disease and another 50,000 are vulnerable, according to OIE. Efforts are underway to trace the source of the outbreak. The OIE reported noted that the poultry farm has several dams that attract wild ducks.

Australia's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry placed the farm under quarantine, according to OIE. The farm is surrounded by restricted area of 3 km (more than 1 mile) in diameter and a 7 km (4 mile) diameter control area. Australian officials said the outbreak poses no risk to the safety of poultry and eggs.
