FRESNO, Calif. – Animal rights activists have claimed responsibility for a fire that destroyed property at Harris Ranch, according to an Associated Press report.

The blaze engulfed 14 tractors and damaged several trailer rigs parked at the Harris Ranch feedlot in Coalinga, Calif. No people or animals were hurt during the fire, which began on around 4 a.m. Jan. 8. The activists claimed responsibility for the fire via e-mail released by the North American Animal Liberation Press Office (NAALPO), according to the AP. The e-mail included a detailed description of the containers of accelerant and kerosene-soaked rope the group claims they used to set the fire. NAALPO only communicates the actions, strategies and philosophy of animal rights groups to the media and the public.

A spokesman for the Fresno County sheriff's office said investigators are looking into the claim and following several other leads, the AP reported. Mike Casey, Harris Farms spokesman, said the company had not received recent threats from animal rights activists.
