TORONTO – A proposed Canada-wide settlement between the plaintiffs in numerous class-action lawsuits, and Maple Foods Inc. and Maple Leaf Consumer Foods Inc. has been submitted to the courts in Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec, where approval is pending. It affects consumers who consumed or purchased certain food that may have contained Listeria monocytogenes and caused some consumers to become ill or die as a result of eating the food.

The proposed settlement would provide a $25 million fund from which eligible claimants could receive compensation. Defendants will also pay up to $2 million more if the settlement fund is insufficient to compensate all eligible claims.

How much money each claimant will receive depends upon the severity of their illness. members.

In order for the settlement to become effective, it must be approved by the courts in Saskatchewan, Ontario and Québec, each of which must be satisfied that the settlement is fair, reasonable, and in the best interests of Class Members.
