WASHINGTON – On June 1, cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.5 million head, which is 1% above June 1, 2009, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Agricultural Statistics Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture.

During May, placements in feedlots totaled 2.02 million, 23% above 2009. Net placements were 1.92 million head. Placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 lbs. were 445,000; 600-699 lbs. were 405,000; 700-799 lbs. were 537,000; and 800 lbs. and greater were 635,000.


Fed cattle marketings during May totaled 1.87 million, 4% below 2009. This is the lowest fed cattle marketings total for the month of May since the series began in 1996.

Other disappearance totaled 102,000 during May, 1% above 2009.
