GIBBON, NEB. — Gibbon Packing, a subsidiary of American Foods Group LLC (AFG), confirmed a fire occurred at its processing plant in Gibbon, Neb., on Sunday, April 21.

AFG told MEAT+POULTRY the operation was not running at the time of the fire with no injuries to report for employees or animals.

“The fire was contained in the rendering facility and did not impact the harvest plant or barn,” AFG said in a statement. “Emergency services extinguished the fire within a couple of hours with no injury.”

On Monday, April 22, production at the Gibbon Packing plant was limited. Full production was expected to resume on April 23. 

Authorities continue to determine the cause, assess the damage, and prepare to restart rendering operations. 

Representatives for Gibbon Packing and AFG said they were grateful for the quick response by the Gibbon Volunteer Fire & Rescue, the Shelton Fire Department, the Kearney Volunteer Department and other local emergency services.
