GREELEY, COLO. — Following a letter to Colorado’s Department of Labor and Employment, Packers Sanitation Services Inc. (PSSI) issued a WARN notice that the company would lay off 175 people working at the JBS USA meat processing plant in Greeley, Colo.

The notice said that PSSI had worked as the sanitation company for JBS USA at that facility since Jan. 1, 2000. The company will cease service to the plant on April 18, 2024.

Last May, JBS decided to end its contract with PSSI following the child-labor investigations that occurred in 2023 against the company. In response, the meat producer created JBS Sanitation.

Since the allegations, JBS has terminated its contracts with PSSI. Locations that formerly serviced through PSSI include Grand Island, Neb., Worthington, Minn., and Greeley, Colo.

The report by the Department of Labor in 2023 stated that four minors were working at the Greeley plant for PSSI.

PSSI agreed to pay $1.5 million in civil penalties during Feb. 2023 after the department found that at least 102 workers ages 13 to 17 years of age were cleaning meatpacking plants.

As the investigations continued last year, Tim Mulhere took over the chief executive officer role for PSSI in April, succeeding Dan Taft, who retired after 24 years at the company.

The sanitation company also created the new position of chief compliance officer in September 2023, led by Diego Alvarez.
