KEARNEY, MO. – The American Meat Science Association (AMSA) recently announced the launch of The Business of Meat, an online course to help people gain more knowledge and skills to enhance their confidence and capabilities throughout the meat industry.

AMSA plans to break the program down into seven structured modules. The group said the course would be ideal for early career professionals, academic classrooms, graduate students and people newly entering the meat industry.

“AMSA recognized the need for a resource that covers the business side of the meat industry, aimed at supporting our members and others engaged in meat-related roles but who might lack familiarity with industry jargon and fundamental meat processing principles,” said Collette Kaster, chief executive officer of AMSA. “Our goal is to extend this resource beyond our membership, ensuring anyone involved in the meat business acquires essential knowledge and comprehension.”

AMSA expects the program to benefit people with roles within retail and foodservice procurement, suppliers to the meat industry and those on early career management tracks.

Key aspects of the meat business that AMSA will focus on include effective use of meat-industry specific terminology and practical application of accounting, business and financial principles. The courses will also help people understand the impact of their role on business performance and profitability.

AMSA said the course was developed in collaboration with industry experts who contributed to creating content that will benefit the meat business. According to AMSA, the course is self-paced and takes approximately four hours to complete.
