SPRINGDALE, ARK. — Tyson Foods Inc. confirmed a report of a layoff taking place at its Wilkesboro, NC, poultry processing plant.

“After careful consideration, and in response to customer demand, we have reduced the number of positions on second shift at the Tyson Foods Wilkesboro complex,” a Tyson Foods spokesperson said. “We realize the impact on our team members and supporting them is our priority. We were able to offer these team members the opportunity to take other positions at the Wilkesboro plant and to apply for positions at other Tyson Foods facilities.”

According to a report from WBTV, the plant employed around 3,000 team members, and Tyson is cutting that number by nearly 250 workers.

With excess poultry production, Tyson is cutting operations not only at the Wilkesboro location but also at other sites.

In early August, Tyson announced plans to close four poultry plants — its North Little Rock, Ark.; Corydon, Ind.; Dexter, Mo.; and Noel, Mo., facilities. The company cited the decision to its commitment to bold action and operational excellence as it strives to lower costs and improve capacity utilization.

Other Tyson plant closures announced this year include the Van Buren, Ark., and Glen Allen, Va., facilities, which together affect around 1,700 jobs.
