ST. CLAIR SHORES, MICH. — Alexander & Hornung, a subsidiary of Perdue Premium Meat Co. Inc., stated it plans to close its St. Clair Shores, Mich., processing plant by the end of the year.

The company, which processes ham, sausage and other value-added meats, provided a closure notice to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity on Aug. 15.

“After an extensive business and financial review we announced the closure of Alexander & Hornung in St. Clair Shores,” a company spokesperson said in a statement to MEAT+POULTRY. “There are no other closures at this time. We are currently fulfilling all inbound orders. We remain committed to providing the highest level of service and quality to customers and consumers and the quality products they expect. Other co-packers will take on the limited production.”

According to a document obtained by WDIV Local 4, all 132 employees would be laid off starting on Oct. 14 2023. Other members of the staff would be dismissed by Jan. 26, 2024.

Affected workers are members of the United Food & commercial Workers Local 876. The notice stated that union members will not have any bumping rights and will not be able to displace junior employees out of job positions as result of the closure.

Perdue Premium Meat acquired Alexander & Hornung in Feb. 2020.
