SMITHFIELD, VA. — As part of its career pathway opportunities program for employees in the United States, Smithfield Foods Inc. announced it will offer tuition payment for full-time and part-time employees. In partnership with Denver-based Guild Education, the new program gives Smithfield workers the opportunity to earn certifications and college degrees in various fields of study at universities and educational providers that have been vetted as part of Smithfield’s career development offerings. The company will cover up to 100% of tuition costs as well as textbooks and other course fees.

"Our employees drive our success, and they are our competitive advantage," said Shane Smith, president and chief executive officer of Smithfield. "We're committed to helping all of our team members grow their careers in a fair, ethical and rewarding work environment.

The program, designed for adults in the workplace, is part of a platform to provide learning and career growth opportunities for working adults and is administered by Guild Education. Guild also works with a variety of companies, including Walmart, Taco Bell, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Pepsico. One of the goals of the Smithfield initiative is to improve employee retention by creating long-term career paths with the company.

“This new tuition-free program will unlock life-changing opportunities for our US employees and will continue to build a foundation for lifelong careers at Smithfield," Smith said.
