ELIZABETHTOWN, NC. — Two men attempted to use counterfeit currency at Smithfield Foods’ facility in Tar Heel, NC, on Jan. 9, according to a report from the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.

A few days later, Fayetteville, NC, residents Tredell Phillip Blackshear, 29, and Andrew DaShawn Smith, 22, were charged for possession and use of counterfeit US currency.

A Smithfield representative told MEAT+POULTRY, “Law enforcement is involved, and we are cooperating with them in their investigation.”

Blackshear and Smith were arrested on Jan. 12 with two counts each of obtaining property under false pretenses and one count each of forgery of an instrument. Smith also had an outstanding warrant from Cumberland County on charges of embezzlement and failure to return rental property.

Blackshear and Smith were held at the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center under a $5,000 and $15,000 bond, respectively.
