Established earlier this year to suggest actions to address the national debt, the commission recommended last month that nearly $1 billion in user fees be charged to meat and poultry processing facilities to finance food-safety and inspection services as part of it’s proposed debt reduction plan, according to the American Meat Institute.
Although the final report didn’t receive the proper number of commission votes to send it to Congress, it is expected that the administration and Congress will use sections of the report as a template for future budget purposes, AMI predicts.
