WASHINGTON – The US Dept. of Agriculture announced that its FoodKeeper App would add 85 new food items including chorizo, prosciutto, edamame, fresh salsa, canned tuna, cereal bars and salad dressings.

The FoodKeeper app shows consumers how to safely handle, prepare and store food. The app allows people to put reminders on their smartphone calendar to use food before it spoils. FoodKeeper also helps consumers reduce their food waste by showing users how long foods may last in a refrigerator, freezer or pantry.

Using the FoodKeeper app, consumers can also:

  • Learn cooking tips and methods for various types of meat, poultry and seafood products;
  • Receive information on food safety recalls;
  • Search food and beverages in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

The FoodKeeper app also can be accessed online to accommodate individuals that don’t have access to a smartphone.

Launched in April 2015, FSIS developed the FoodKeeper app in partnership with Cornell Univ. and the Food Marketing Institute. FoodKeeper is available for Android devices on Google Play and iTunes for iOS devices.
