WASHINGTON – Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter totaled 10.2 million head on Aug. 1 at feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head, the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) of the US Dept. of Agriculture said in its Cattle on Feed report.

For July, placements in feedlots increased 2 percent to 1.57 million head, while net placements were 1.52 million head, NASS reported. For the month, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 lbs. were 352,000 head, 600-699 lbs. were 235,000 head, 700-799 lbs. were 360,000 head and 800 lbs. and greater were 625,000 head.

Marketings of fed cattle, at 1.71 million head, were the lowest for July since the series began in 1996. The total was 1 percent below 2015.

Other disappearance in July totaled 50,000 head, a decline of 11 percent from a year ago, according to NASS.
