peameal bacon sandwich
The peameal bacon sandwich is very Canadian, and very Toronto.

Competition for the title of Toronto’s Signature Dish was tight but in the end, bacon prevailed.

Toronto Mayor John Tory revealed the peameal bacon sandwich as the winner during the city’s Lovin’ Local Food Fest. Peameal bacon is made from boneless pork loin. Historically, the back bacon was rolled in ground yellow peas to extend shelf life. Nowadays, peameal bacon is trimmed, wet cured and rolled in cornmeal.

“It’s very Canadian — not necessarily everybody’s taste, but very Toronto,” Tory said to the Lovin’ Local Food Fest crowd.

Other food items on the ballot were street meats (hot dogs/sausages), the Jamaican patty and the burrito.
