MISSISSAUGA, Ontario – Dr. Jeffrey Gandz and Diane McGarry will retire from Maple Leaf Foods' board of directors at the company's shareholder meeting scheduled for April 30.

Gandz has served on the board since 1999 and is a member of the Corporate Governance Committee and the Environment, Health and Safety Committee. McGarry has been a director at Maple Leaf since 2005. She chairs the Audit Committee and serves on the Environment, Health and Safety Committee.


Standing for election to the board is Ron Close, who was nominated as an independent director. Close is known for his work in Canadian broadcasting and media. He served as president and CEO of Pelmorex Media (The Weather Network), president, Bell New Ventures, which included overseeing Sympatico-MSN and was also a co-founder and CEO of Netcom Canada.

He has served on several boards including Pelmorex,The Globe and Mail, Canada Media Fund, CTVglobemedia, and MaRS Innovation.

McCain Capital Inc. nominated Close to replace Gandz. Shareholders will cast their votes at the company's upcoming annual general meeting.
