WASHINGTON – Frozen red meat and poultry supplies were lower compared to 2013 stocks, according to the US Dept. of Agriculture's cold storage report.

On May 31, 2014, total red meat supplies in freezers were down 3 percent from April and down 16 percent from May 31, 2013, to total 982,094,000 lbs.


Total pounds of beef in freezers were 378,899,000 lbs., down 6 percent from the previous month and down 21 percent from a year ago.

Frozen pork supplies were down 1 percent from the previous month and down 13 percent from last year at 575,246,000 lbs. Stocks of pork bellies gained 3 percent from last month and jumped 57 percent compared to a year ago to total 85,859,000 lbs.

Frozen poultry supplies on May 31, 2014, totaled 1,035,853,000 lbs. an 8 percent gain compared to the previous month but down 15 percent from a year ago. Total stocks of chicken advanced 5 percent from the previous month but dropped 12 percent from last year to a total of 610,124,000 lbs.

Total pounds of turkey in freezers were up 13 percent from last month but down 19 percent from a year ago with a total of 424,296,000 lbs.
