NOXAPATER, Miss. – A Mississippi poultry farm under contract with Tyson Foods Inc. lost scores of birds after taking a direct hit from a large tornado, the Associated Press reported.

Charlie and Cindy Wilkes, owners of Wilkes Farm in Noxapater, Miss., said winds destroyed eight poultry houses holding 28,500 broilers each. Workers from Tyson Foods were trying to catch birds that survived the storm. Charlie Wilkes estimated his losses at $1.5 million, according to AP.

An estimated 30 poultry houses in the surrounding area were damaged or destroyed along with offices, homes and other personal property.

In a statement, Tyson said: “Our hearts go out to the family farmers who were affected by the storms this week. In Mississippi, some farmers’ poultry houses were destroyed. We’re helping them with the cleanup efforts and hope they can rebuild soon.”
