CARLISLE, Pa. – Giant Food of Maryland LLC launched its own recall of Oven Cravers brand frozen, raw, stuffed and breaded chicken products manufactured by Chicago-based Aspen Foods. The retailer said it is pulling product off store shelves and informing consumers about the recall because the chicken may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Giant has received no reports of illnesses related to the Oven Cravers product. The FSIS alert included products bearing EST # P-1358 and best by dates between Oct. 29, 2016, and Dec. 16, 2016. However, the company said all code dates for the products are being pulled “out of an abundance of caution.” The retailer said customers who bought the product should discard it and bring their receipt to Giant for a full refund.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert on Sept. 18 warning consumers that frozen stuffed chicken products manufactured by Aspen Foods may be contaminated by Salmonella enteritidis.
A previous food safety investigation linked the company’s frozen, raw, stuffed and breaded chicken products to a cluster of illnesses in Minnesota. In July, Aspen Foods, a unit of Koch Poultry Company, launched a recall of 1,978,680 lbs. of its frozen, raw, stuffed and breaded chicken.
FSIS intensified sampling efforts at Aspen Foods following the outbreak. The agency said 12 samples tested positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella enteritidis. Aspen Foods declined to recall the products, which prompted the agency to issue the public health alert.
“FSIS cannot have confidence in the safety of any products produced after July 30, 2015,” the agency said in the alert. “In addition to issuing this alert, FSIS has directed its personnel to detain products covered by this alert that they find in commerce because the company has refused to recall the products.”
