LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Unified School District, one of the largest school districts in the United States, has quietly embraced Meatless Mondays, according to news reports.

All schools within the district stopped serving meat on Mondays in February. The district's web site states that LAUSD's Food Services Division currently serves more than 109 million meals annually, including lunch and the largest breakfast program in the US.

"Emphasizing low-fat choices, vegetarian options, whole grains, fresh fruits, salads and milk in place of sugary drinks, the LAUSD menu exceeds the federal United States Department of Agriculture guidelines and the federal Institute of Medicine’s nutrient recommendations," according to the LAUSD site.

In November 2012, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to adopt a resolution endorsing Meatless Mondays. The resolution does not have the force of law, but city officials hoped it would start a trend.
