DENVER, COLO. — Supermarkets are being encouraged by the American Lamb Board to take advantage of historically low wholesale prices of lamb loin and rack cuts during the upcoming summer grilling season. Opportunities exist for retailers to aggressively feature loin and rack cuts to lamb customers, as well as introduce new fresh-meat options to customers who might not be familiar with preparing lamb at home, A.L.B. said.

Since the foodservice industry has been hit by the economic downturn, an increase in supply has driven lamb wholesale prices to low levels. Wholesale prices for lamb loin cuts were $3.59 per lb. and $4.74 per lb. for lamb rack cuts for the week ending on May 22, which is significantly below historically average levels, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"This is a great time for retailers to feature American Lamb loin cuts and take advantage of this wholesale pricing trend," said Megan Wortman, executive director of the A.L.B. "Lamb is not just for fine dining anymore; it is growing in popularity among people who want a great-tasting, nutritious, center-of-the-plate protein. More than ever, consumers are looking for great meal options and value while grocery shopping. The current market has created an opportunity for retailers to offer their customers options and value while building their bottom line."
