SMITHFIELD, Va. – Smithfield Foods, Inc. released a video showing group housingfor pregnant sows at the company owned farms. The pork processor committed to phasing out gestation stalls at all company owned farms by 2017.

"We think this is both an entertaining and informative look at how we are caring for pregnant sows, with actual footage from our sow farms that helps to explain how the group housing system ensures the safety, comfort and health of the sows during the gestation process," said Dennis Treacy, Smithfield's executive vice president and chief sustainability officer.

Smithfield will have invested roughly $300 million when the conversion is complete. The company's international hog operations also will convert to group housing by 2022.
