ABERDEEN, SC – Northern Beef Packers is withholding worker paychecks as the beef processing plant continues to struggle, according to local news reports.

In another setback for the troubled processor, company officials told workers July 17 that their July 19 paychecks would not be distributed "due to ongoing delays with securing additional funding", and that the company hoped to pay employees early the following week.

In April, Northern Beef Packers announced temporary layoffs for 108 of its 420 employees while the company raised money to buy more cattle. The plan was for furloughed employees to return by late July.
Once fully operational, the plant was expected to process 1,500 head of cattle per day. The plant currently processes 200 head per day from the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota.
