WASHINGTON – Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter in feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.7 million head on June 1, 2013, a 3 percent decline compared to a year ago, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Placements in feedlots during May eased 2 percent to 2.05 million. Net placements were 1.95 million head. During May, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 lbs. were 390,000, 600-699 lbs. were 304,000, 700-799 lbs. were 555,000, and 800 lbs. and greater were 800,000, NASS reported.


Marketing of fed cattle during May totaled 1.95 million, 3 percent below May 2012 levels. Marketings were the second lowest since the series began in 1996 for the month of May, according to NASS.
Other disappearance totaled 100,000 during May, unchanged from a year ago.
