WASHINGTON – Cattle and calves on feed in feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.7 million head on May 1, 2013, 3 percent below May 1, 2012, the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service reported.

Placements in feedlots during April gained 15 percent to total 1.75 million. Net placements were 1.68 million head. During April, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 375,000, 600-699 lbs. were 270,000, 700-799 lbs. were 455,000, and 800 lbs. and greater were 650,000.


Marketings of fed cattle during April climbed 2 percent to 1.86 million, and other disappearance totaled 69,000 during April, a decline of 12 percent, according to NASS.
