CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. – Eager to get a dormant processing facility up and running, city and county officials have offered Sugar Creek Packing Co. plenty of incentives, according to news reports.

Sugar Creek Packing Co. bought the former Really Cool Foods Plant in Cambridge City, Ind., during a bankruptcy auction in Indianapolis. The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered the company up to $2.85 million in conditional tax credits and up to $175,000 in training grants. The incentives are in addition to funds from Wayne County.

Sugar Creek Packing was the lone bidder for the plant at $13 million. The company plans to invest $28.5 million in improvements, which include a 70,000-sq.-ft. expansion, facility upgrades and new equipment. The company expects to install five cooking lines by 2016, with two lines installed and staff by the fourth quarter of 2013. Cooking lines will be installed and staff each year until 2016. Sugar Creek estimates the plant will create 400 jobs. The company expects to have an annual payroll of $13.9 million by 2016.

In 2007, Really Cool Foods built a food processing facility, promising a $100 million investment in the community and jobs for 1,000 workers. But the company had problems, and abruptly closed its doors in November 2011.
