ATLANTA – The total number of people infected with an outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis has grown to 40, according to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.

CDC said the number of people hospitalized in connection with the outbreak remains at 11, and no deaths have been reported. The number of infections identified in each state is as follows: Maine (1), Massachusetts (3), New Hampshire (2), New York (18), Rhode Island (2), Vermont (11), Virginia (2), and West Virginia (1).

The outbreak has been linked to ground beef produced at a Cargill Beef facility in Wyalusing, Penn. The company initiated a voluntary recall of more than 29,000 lbs. of ground beef produced at the plant after a multi-state investigation into the outbreak pointed to Cargill’s ground beef as a likely source of the pathogen.

CDC said test results show the outbreak strain can be treated with commonly prescribed antibiotics.
