ATLANTA – The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has confirmed 15 cases of STEC O145 infection in six states. Four people were hospitalized, and one person died from the infection, CDC said.

The source of the multistate outbreak has not been identified. Dates for the onset of illness range from April 15 to May 12. Six weeks has elapsed since the last illness onset among the reported cases, which could indicate the outbreak may be over, according to CDC. However, the agency said it would continue to work with local agencies to identify additional cases and the source of the STEC O145 infections.

CDC began investigating the cluster of illnesses in May. By then, six ill persons had been reported to CDC PulseNet from two states. The number of ill persons identified in each state is as follows: Alabama (2), California (1), Florida (1), Georgia (5), Louisiana (5), and Tennessee (1).
