JAKARTA, Indonesia – Indonesia became the first country to halt US beef imports on concerns of a recent confirmed case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in a dairy cow in central California, according to a report from Bloomberg News.

The country’s agriculture minister said Indonesia would lift the ban as soon as the US can assure its dairy cows are BSE-free. He added it could take one month or one year to lift the ban depending on how long it takes to resolve the issue.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed the fourth US case of BSE in a dairy cow at a California-based rendering facility. John Clifford, USDA chief veterinary officer, said the BSE case should not affect US trade and that the detection does not affect the country’s status as determined by the OIE. Also, officials in Canada and Japan said there are no plans for those countries to stop US beef imports.
