CONCORD, NH – The family of a 70-year-old woman has settled a wrongful death lawsuit brought against Shaw’s supermarket in Seabrook, NH , Greater Omaha Packing Co., Omaha, Neb., and Fairbank Farms, Ashville, NY, according to a report on Seacoastonline.com. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

The lawsuit alleges that Carolyn Black fell ill with symptoms consistent with an E. coli O157:H7 infection two days after eating ground beef. Black was hospitalized Oct. 4 to Oct. 30, 2009 when she died “from respiratory failure, multisystem failure and hemolytic uremic syndrome/thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, all directly resulting from her exposure to E. coli O157:H7,” according to the lawsuit.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a notice on Oct. 31, 2009 about a recall of approximately 545,699 lbs. of ground beef products from Fairbank Farms on concerns the product was contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

According to the lawsuit, Greater Omaha Packing supplied the beef trim to Fairbank Farms, which processed the beef and supplied it to Shaw’s supermarkets in multiple states, including New Hampshire.
