OTTAWA, Ontario – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency expanded a recall of beef burger products on concerns the products may be contaminated by E. coli O157:H7.

The agency and Loblaw Companies Ltd., Brampton, Ontario, are warning the public not to eat Butcher’s Choice Hickory Barbecue Beef Burgers. The affected Butcher's Choice Hickory Barbecue Beef Burgers are:

• BEST BEFORE code 2013 FE 10 and UPC EST 752 0 60383 89364 4
• BEST BEFORE code 2013 FE 01 and UPC EST 752 0 60383 89364 4

“This recall is the result of E. coli O157:H7 product testing by the CFIA related to an ongoing outbreak investigation,” the agency said. “The CFIA is currently testing additional products collected from across the country. The recall may be further updated to include other codes or products as test results are received. In addition, the CFIA is conducting an investigation at the producing facility, which could lead to the recall of more products.”

The Hickory Barbecue burger products are being recalled in addition to Butcher’s Choice Garlic Peppercorn Beef Burgers. CFIA launched an investigation into those items after a small cluster of E. coli infections were reported by the Public Health Agency of Canada. PHAC officials said there is strong evidence that the cases identified are linked to a common source, but investigators have not located the source.
