CHICAGO – Environmental sustainability is a key component in addressing world hunger, and the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) plans to highlight the role food science plays in ensuring the efficient use of resources used in food production as part of World Food Day.

IFT developed a new video and public education campaign called World Without Food Science, which shows how food science and technology provide sustainable solutions throughout the food system and ensures a nutritious, safe and abundant food supply.

“Food preservation and processing are what have helped us feed billions, but we have to come up with even newer technologies to feed the billions of people by 2050,” said John Ruff, IFT president. “As food scientists we are committed to further improving sustainability within the product lifecycle — from sustainable ingredient sourcing, to product development, to waste management.”
