SILISTRA, Bulgaria – The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency closed a meat processing plant in the town of Silistra after inspectors found 4,200 kg of frozen meat with expiration dates from 2009 and without documentation, according to FOCUS Information Agency.

The company, which was unnamed, filed an application to export meat to Russia. But a check on the plant revealed 4 tons of frozen lamb, calf and pork meat that was undocumented and well past its use-by date.
Food safety officials are investigating whether any of the meat was released into the country’s food supply. The company is described as one of the biggest meat processing plants in Bulgaria, according to FOCUS Information Agency.
