SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Associated Press reported that commercial red meat production for South Dakota dipped 4 percent from November totals to 96.5 million lbs. during December, However, production advanced 1 percent over the year.

South Dakota pork production was up but sheep and lamb production was down from a year ago, according to the Agriculture Department.

Commercial hog slaughter for South Dakota totaled just over 427,000 head during December, compared to about 433,000 head the year before. Average live weight was 272 lbs., and increase of 5 lbs. from December 2010.

Sheep and lamb slaughter for South Dakota was flat, totaling 200 head during December. Average live weight was 115 lbs., down 16 lbs. from December 2010.
