MORLINY, Poland – Animex, a Polish meat producer owned by Smithfield Foods, announced on Jan. 24 that it will eliminate 230 jobs at its manufacturing complex in Morliny near Ostroda, Poland. The job cuts, just over 20 percent of the plant’s 1,026-person workforce, are a result of the decision to shut down beef operations at Morliny, according to according to PMR Publications, an online Polish business news site.

The Morliny facility’s beef operations included a slaughterhouse and a processing unit. According to the company, these beef operations were unprofitable. The focus will now be on the processing of poultry and pork at that facility.

Animex purchased the Morliny complex from Madrid, Spain-based Campofrio in 2005. Smithfield Foods sold its main beef-processing business in 2008.
