GUELPH, Ontario — Approximately 800 Cargill Meat Solution workers in Canada could go on strike this week after union workers at the company’s Dunlop Drive processing facility (a.k.a. Better Beef) rejected a contract offer this past weekend.

According to the Guelph Mercury, a spokesman for the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 175 said the two sides will go before a mediator Feb. 2, a day before the deadline for an agreement, which is Feb. 3 at midnight.

“We are hopeful this can be resolved and talks are ongoing,” said Mike Martin, spokesman for Cargill.

Luc LaCelle, director of UFCW’s Region 6 said a mediated settlement is a possibility on the heels of the rejected offer that was turned down because of “rollbacks,” but details were not given.

“They backed away from a lot of stuff,” LaCelle told the Mercury, “so right now what are outstanding are wages and some language around flex employees.”

A mediated offer would again be voted on by the employees.
