FORT BRANCH, Ind. – Asbestos removal is underway at a former Emge meat packing plant in southwestern Indiana that burned for several days in 2010, The Associated Press stated. The cleanup project near Fort Branch, Ind., is expected to take from four to six weeks to complete.

A crew was hired by the US Environmental Protection Agency to handle this project.

The $400,000 cleanup will leave the site environmentally clean, but the agency isn't demolishing the building, said EPA project manager Kevin Turner.

Asbestos inside the plant was exposed when part of the plant was torn down in June 2010 to allow a fire to be put out after four days of smoldering inside the concrete walls. The plant closed in 1999 after operating for 90 years.
