WASHINGTON – Smithfield Packing Company plants in Clinton, N.C., and Tar Heel, N.C., are recalling approximately 216,238 lbs. of Portobello Mushroom flavored pork loins because some of the product may contain an undeclared allergen. Products prepared contain an ingredient blend that includes whey (from milk), a known allergen, which was not declared on the label, according to a statement from the company.

“We recently discovered during a routine label review that one of our products may contain the undeclared and known dairy allergen, whey. As a precautionary measure, Smithfield immediately reported it to the USDA and has issued a voluntary recall,” Dennis Pittman, director of corporate communications said in a press release.

The company recently reformulated this product. No reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products have been received.

Products subject to recall are various weight individual packages of Smithfield Portobello Mushroom Pork Loin Filet. Products subject to recall bear the USDA mark of inspection on the label and EST. 413 or EST. 18079 inside the mark of inspection. Affected products from EST. 413 bear a use-by date ranging from 12/26/10 to 6/02/11. Affected products from EST. 18079 bear a use by date ranging from 1/16/11 to 4/24/11. These products were distributed in retail outlets in Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts., Mississippi, North Carolina., New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

Although the sell-by dates for many of these products has passed, consumers may freeze the product before use and there is concern some product may still be frozen and in consumers’ freezers.
