WASHINGTON – Workplace injury and illness rates in the US meat industry remain at a record low, based on new numbers released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), according to the American Meat Institute.
Total recordable injury and illness rates in 2010 were at 6.9 cases per 100 full-time workers per year. Ten years ago, this number was 14.7, more than twice the current rate, AMI stated.
“Worker safety is of utmost importance to our industry, which is why we have made it a non-competitive issue,” said J. Patrick Boyle, AMI president and CEO. “Over the past two decades we have made meaningful and measurable improvements, and we hope to continue to build on this record of success as we strive to make our workplaces as safe as possible.”
