HARRISONBURG, Va. — Tyson Food Inc. has laid off 24 workers at its poultry-processing plant in Harrisonburg, Va. A company spokesman provided MEATPOULTRY.com with the details behind this move.

“Our Harrisonburg poultry complex relies on workers to go to area farms to collect and load birds for shipment to our processing plant,” said company spokesman Gary Mickelson. “We recently decided to hire an outside contractor to handle this responsibility. This has resulted in the elimination of 24 Tyson positions [chicken-catching jobs].”

All people affected were given an opportunity to apply for jobs with the contract chicken-catching company, as well as apply for openings at Tyson’s Harrisonburg plant, he added.
