LAS CRUCES, NM. – The New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) confirmed it would start accepting applications in July for the New Mexico Local Meat Processing Grant (LMPG) for fiscal year 2026, where it will offer up to $3 million to support meat processors.

The state agency held a virtual workshop on June 25 to help applicants understand the program.

“New Mexico livestock producers need access to reliable, local processing options,” said New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture Jeff Witte. “This funding helps strengthen local food systems, create economic opportunities and improve meat processing capacity across the state.”

The grant was initiated during the 2025 legislative session to encourage processors to adopt new technologies and enhance their systems for meat byproduct disposal. NMDA explained the fund could support a wide range of activities like equipment purchases, facility upgrades, regulatory compliance, value-added processing, and supply chain improvements.

The state agency explained there is no match requirement, and the funds need to be used by July 2029. Before applying, processors were encouraged to evaluate their eligibility, planned expenses, timelines, partnerships and other key factors to ensure a strong proposal.

Applications are due by July 31 with more details available here.
