AMARILLO, TEXAS — Tyson Foods workers, who are represented by Teamsters Local 577, voted on June 27 to authorize a strike at the Amarillo, Texas, beef plant.

The union’s demands include higher wages and improved benefits for the 3,100 union members working in slaughtering and processing.

Some claims made by the union include unfair labor practices (ULP) against employees at the meat company.

“In the past month, management has harassed union stewards, coerced injured employees into dropping claims, illegally interrogated union members, and falsely told workers at the facility that if they engaged in a ULP strike, they would lose their jobs,” Local 577 said in its statement.

The union reported a 98% margin vote to authorize a strike.

In August 2022, Tyson Foods provided details on an expansion and upgrade of operations at the Amarillo plant. At the time, the facility employed 4,000 workers with an annual payroll of $180 million.

Tyson Foods did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publication on the authorized union strike.
