DES MOINES, IOWA — During an Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) meeting on June 20, the board approved $12 million in tax benefits for the upcoming JBS sausage plant in Perry, Iowa. The tax break was made possible through the High Quality Jobs program.
JBS’s $135 million project was announced at the end of May. Construction is expected to begin in late 2025 with a completion date of late 2026.
The new 150,000-square-foot facility will produce 130 million lbs of sausage per year, processing 500,000 hogs annually. JBS plans to create 250 jobs within the first three years. Ultimately, the workforce will build up to 500 workers once the plant opens a second shift.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds expressed excitement for the project.
“Today’s announcement is tremendous news for Perry and the entire state of Iowa,” Reynolds said. “This investment by JBS reflects confidence in Iowa’s workforce, our strong agricultural economy and our commitment to growing vibrant communities. At a time when Perry has faced real challenges, this investment brings renewed hope and opportunity for the hardworking families who call this community home.”
JBS already operates in Iowa in Council Bluffs, Marshalltown and Ottumwa, employing over 5,300 residents.
“This investment aligns with our ongoing commitment to Iowa, our producer partners, team members and the US market as we look to build a best-in-class sausage production facility,” said Wesley Batista Filho, JBS USA chief executive officer. “We are grateful to the state of Iowa for their continued support, and we look forward to being part of the Perry community — creating quality jobs and economic opportunity in the region.”
