UNION SPRINGS, ALA. — The Wayne-Sanderson Farms poultry production facility in Union, Springs, Ala., reported a temporary shutdown and evacuation following an equipment fire on Feb. 25.
A company spokesperson confirmed the local fire department and company employees had responded to the incident and were able to extinguish the fire.
“Damage to the plant has resulted in temporary closure of on-site processing operations at Union Springs pending investigation into the cause and subsequent equipment repairs,” the company spokesperson said.
Live poultry scheduled for processing and production at the facility was diverted to other company plants in Alabama.
Wayne-Sanderson said no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
According to the company website, the Union Springs facility features a fresh processing plant, hatchery and feed mill. Weekly processing capacity for the facility was 641,700 birds. The mill supports the plant and two other fresh facilities near the facility.
